THE first landmark on the Isle of Mull for many visitors will be the all-year-round busy ferry port of Craignure which is situated midway twixt north and south on the island’s eastern shore.
Transport has always played an important role in the history of Craignure with nearby Duart Castle, ancestral home to the Clan MacLean, commanding the southern end of the important sea trading passage that is the Sound of Mull.

Today Craignure is the transport hub of the island with car ferries arriving or departing for Oban every other hour, coaches linking passengers with the historic Isle of Iona to the south, and the island’s capital of Tobermory in the north.

Close by is the wonderfully Victorian Torosay Castle with its beautiful gardens and spectacular interiors, plus the opportunity to travel on Scotland’s first island railway, the novel narrow gauge system which runs between the castle and Craignure.
