IT IS often claimed that there is a special magical aura around Scottish islands – the Isle of Bute, which nestles in the Firth of Clyde, is no exception to that claim.

From the early Christian settlers, through the turbulent years of Viking raids to today’s much more tranquil setting, Bute’s accessibility has always been a key element in the island’s popularity.

Two car ferries service a buoyant and thriving economy with its closeness to mainland road, rail and air links making Bute one of the west coast of Scotland’s easiest islands to enjoy.
The island capital of Rothesay offers all the attributes you would expect of a large rural town, but in close proximity to beautiful beaches such as Kilchattan Bay, or for those of a more energetic nature, the island boasts three golf courses with views that can rival any that Scotland has to offer.

There is the Victorian splendour of Mount Stuart, a Gothic palace of lavish design which has benefited from a restoration programme that continues today. The Mount Stuart gardens are amongst the finest in Europe, a 300 acre wonderland of wilderness, woodland and carefully crafted landscapes, all brought up to date with the inclusion of the new contemporary garden which compliments the visitor centre.
